The Lonely Tree Story
Grab a cup of coffee, wine or whiskey and let me tell you a story!
At 17, my dream began to take shape, enveloped in the typical restlessness of youth. Surrounded by the artistic tapestry of my upbringing, our home was a sanctuary of creativity. My mother, with her deft hands and a palette of hues, wove stories into every quilt she crafted, each stitch a delicate expression of patience and precision. Beside her, my father conjured wonders from wood, fashioning bespoke furniture that seemed to breathe with a life of its own. Witnessing their artistry, transforming fabric and wood into one-of-a-kind masterpieces left an indelible mark on my soul. It was their dedication to their crafts that first inspired my love for creating something from nothing. Witnessing the joy on people's faces when they received my parents' handmade gifts left a lasting impression; it’s a unique experience that still takes my breath away.
In my late teens, while studying floral design, fate introduced me to two extraordinary souls who would forever alter the course of my life: Don & Nancy Hartman. Graced with the opportunity to intern at their charming floral shop and antique haven, I glimpsed a glimpse of my future dream—a haven brimming with antiques, floral splendors, artisanal treasures, and exquisite home decor. It was a realm where nostalgia intertwined with sophistication, where each discovery sparked joy upon eager faces.
While my parents had instilled within me a robust work ethic, it was under Don & Nancy's gentle tutelage that my personal growth and professional accountability blossomed. For years thereafter, I showcased my creations at some of the nation's largest shows- those bustling, exhilarating weeks surrounded by people who adored my booth and my items, were some of my happiest moments. Through it all, Don & Nancy and my beloved parents were my steadfast supporters, fueling the flames of my aspirations.
Ultimately, the time arrived when I decided to leave the corporate world, emboldened by a fervent resolve to chase my dreams. Tearfully departing the security of my former career, I grappled with doubt and uncertainty. Yet, as the warm days of June gave way to the bustling excitement of my largest annual showcase in August, I felt a profound certainty in my heart: this was my true calling.
Giving My Dream A Name
One day, my family and I gathered in the cozy living room of my son's college apartment, brainstorming names for my new business. My youngest daughter, with her usual spark of creativity, suggested, “What about The Lonely Tree?” The room fell silent for a moment before we all erupted in agreement. It was perfect! Some people find the name a bit melancholic, but for us, it stirs up cherished memories.
When I was a child, my parents would pack me and my siblings into the car for a summer evening drive to our favorite roadside ice cream stand. We all adored ice cream, but the 20-minute journey felt like an eternity to a five-year-old. As we neared our destination, about a mile and a half away, we’d spot a solitary maple tree in the middle of a cornfield. My mother would cheerfully announce, “There’s the lonely tree; we’re almost there!” Those drives were filled with laughter, anticipation, and the joy of countless summer nights.
For forty years, I've returned to that beloved ice cream stand, first with my children and now with my grandchildren, creating new memories with each visit. Just as the lonely tree once signaled the nearness of a sweet treat and happy times as a child, seeing my shop’s sign every day reminds me of the joy and passion that await me inside. For me and my family, The Lonely Tree is a name full of happiness and cherished memories. I hope that when you visit us online or in our store, you feel that same joy.
Meet The Lonely Tree Family
Owner & Dreamer
Kim
As the owner and founder of the company, Kim is the heart and soul of The Lonely Tree. From meticulously arranging every inch of the shop to constantly searching for new and unique products to bring in the store, it’s Kim’s hard work and vision that make The Lonely Tree the special experience it is today.
Inventor
Matthew
With a hankering for atta-boys and the promise of fine vittles, Matthew serves at the pleasure of Kimberly; from primping floral arrangements to melting metal, no task or creation is too grand or minute.
“Perfectly imperfect” is the type of finish sought at the Lonely Tree. For his years as a finish guy in the trades, the transition from laser straight and a perfect shine to “it needs more patina,” has been an ongoing but delightful adjustment.
His hope and goal is to keep in Kimberly’s good graces and provide unique and lovely additions to the lives of patrons at the Lonely Tree.
CTO & General Laborer
Ken
Kim’s son. While currently living in Brooklyn, Ken is in charge of all Lonely Tree content tech, from building this website to plugging in the printer and everything in between. That said, don’t be surprised to occasionally see him working up a sweat around the shop moving heavy objects while Kim sips her coffee, points with authority and tells him how glad she is he came to visit.
Also, feel free to pick up signed copies of his poetry book in-store or online at the link below.
Kat
Kim's lifelong bestie, Kat looks after all things that are an annoyance to Kim! She works diligently to keep Kim organized with her piles of paperwork, so that Kim's time is freed for creating new handcrafted gems for The Tree. She will deliver amazingly timed coffee, or adult beverages depending on day, season, or stress level - along with a smile, corny humor, laugh, and love for The Tree. Kat is often found at the store assisting with systemic malfunctions, helping with customers, rearranging, or providing store coverage while Kim is out hunting all the treasures.
Second In Command
Jane
The ever talented Jane. Jack of all trades, and also master of them all, she is a talented Painter, Crafter, and Friend. As we all do, she does her best to keep Kim in line. Noticing a theme yet? If you’re lucky enough to be able to visit The Lonely Tree in person, you’ll have the pleasure of meeting her at the store.
Chief Treat Inspector
Wiggles
Obviously the most valuable member of the team, Wiggles (also known in local circles as "Marley") is in charge of making sure every food product that we sell has gone through a rigorous taste testing and approval process. Likes pats on the head almost as much as Matthew.
